Here we will provide you with insights on how it all works and the various types of bets available.
Betting on baseball does not have to be a challenge. It’s actually rather easy to explain MLB odds and how to place bets. Yes, you can check out either FanDuel’s MLB odds or DraftKings’ MLB odds, but the Betway Sportsbook is the place to find MLB odds that are easy to understand. Here, you’ll find MLB odds explained in detail.
For MLB betting, an “NRI” is a “no-run inning,” meaning the pitcher didn’t allow any runs, and the hitters didn’t score. A “NRFI” is a “no-run first inning.” NRFI betting is one of the most popular kinds of MLB wagers online.
Why? The first inning is really the only inning when bettors can be guaranteed that the starting pitcher will be on the mound.
The YRI is the opposite of the NRI. Why? A YRI means “yes-run inning,” indicating the pitcher allowed a run or at least one of the hitters managed to score.
YRFI means “yes-run first inning.” YRFI odds are some of the most popular is baseball. Check out the Betway Sportsbook to see YRFI bets today.
Reading Major League Baseball odds is not unlike reading odds from other sports. There are moneylines, over/unders, and spreads just like in football betting. If you think you are going to struggle understanding MLB odds, remember that they are not very different from odds in other sports!
Wondering about some common types of MLB bets? There are MLB moneylines, MLB point spreads, live MLB betting, MLB parlays, and more.
How do MLB moneylines work? MLB moneyline bets are just like moneylines in other sports, meaning bettors are picking who they think will win the game outright. Of course, the moneyline for the favorite/stronger team will not yield as large a payout. Here’s an example:
The favored Philadelphia Phillies are playing the underdog Pittsburgh Pirates in Philadelphia.
The Phillies have a moneyline of -200, and the Pirates have a moneyline of +160.
A $200 bet on the Phillies returns $100. A $100 bet on the Pirates returns $160.
Point spreads (also known as run lines) exist for baseball too! Major League Baseball point-spread betting is a fun way to pick an underdog whom you might not have wanted to bet on to win. Here’s an example of MLB ATS betting (ATS means against the spread):
The favored Philadelphia Phillies are playing the underdog Pittsburgh Pirates in Philadelphia.
The Phillies have a spread of -2.5, and the Pirates have a spread of +2.5.
If someone bets on the Pirates at +2.5 and Pittsburgh loses 7-5, then the bettor wins the bet.
To see MLB picks against the spread, check out the Betway Insider blog during the season, where you’ll be kept up to date on all the best MLB point spreads today.
MLB over/unders work just like over/unders in football. The bettor is wagering on the cumulative score of the game.
Here’s an example of an over/under bet:
The Philadelphia Phillies are playing the Pittsburgh Pirates in Philadelphia.
The over/under is set at 8.5.
If someone bets on over, and the Phillies win 6-3, then the bettor win the bet. If the Pirates win 3-2, however, the bettor would lose the bet.
Bettors can also bet on MLB over/under wins, meaning a wagerer can bet on a given team’s total wins for the entire season. To see the best MLB over/unders today, check out the Betway Sportsbook.
MLB live betting is a great way to engage in a game as it’s happening.
Here’s an example of live betting:
The Philadelphia Phillies are losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 in the 4th inning.
The live moneyline on the Phillies is +300, marked up from the -200 before the game started.
A live moneyline bet on the Phillies comes with higher risk but higher rewards.
MLB live betting strategy is different from wagering before the game, as runs have been scored and different pitchers might have already entered the game.
MLB player-prop bets enable bettors to pick a specific player to achieve something during the game, whether that be hitting a home run, stealing a base, driving in some runs, striking out several batters, etc.
Here’s an example of a player-prop bet:
Phillies star Bryce Harper has +350 odds to hit a home run.
Harper doesn’t hit a home run in every game, so a bet of +350 is a fair balance of the risk/reward related to such a wager.
Check out the Betway sportsbook to see the best MLB player props today.
MLB parlays are multiple bets squeezed into one. This means bettors can combine bets related to multiple games into one overall wager.
Here’s an example of an MLB parlay:
The Philadelphia Phillies are -200 moneyline favorites to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cleveland Guardians are -120 moneyline favorites to beat the Cincinnati Reds.
A parlay picking the Phillies (-200) and the Guardians (-120) to win will pay out higher than each of those individual moneylines.
However, for this parlay to hit, both the Phillies and Guardians must win.
According to recent MLB betting trends, parlays are becoming more and more popular in baseball. To see more MLB picks and parlays and MLB parlays today, check out the Betway Insider blog.
An MLB same-game parlay is the same thing as a parlay, only with all legs of the bet occurring in the same game.
Here’s an example of an MLB same-game parlay:
The Phillies are -200 favorites to beat the Pirates.
Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper has +350 odds to hit a home run.
A bettor places a same-game parlay on the Phillies to win and Harper to hit a home run. The odds for the parlay will be pretty long, but the bettor needs both outcomes to occur in order for this potentially high-reward bet to cash.
MLB same-game parlay strategy is different from betting before the game. To read more about MLB odds today, check out the Betway Insider blog.
Below, you’ll learn about different MLB events that are popular with bettors. For each, you’ll learn about the MLB bets, MLB betting lines, and MLB odds available for these specific events.
Bet on MLB games for the MLB 2024 season on the Betway Sportsbook.
MLB preseason betting is only different from regular-season betting for two reasons: not every starting player for the MLB 2024 season will play during this “spring training” period, and starting pitchers will not go as deep into the game.
MLB preseason odds might not perfectly reflect team skill, so don’t be surprised if you see different lines than you might expect.
Opening Day is one of the most exciting MLB events of the year, as the games draw a larger audience and teams look to start their seasons on a positive note. MLB Opening Day odds 2024 are already out, so get ahead of the action now if you can!
The 2024 MLB season will involve just about every day from April through September, and daily MLB regular-season games will be available to bet on (except during the All-Star break in mid-July). Nothing in baseball is more exciting than the postseason, so stick with Betway for MLB playoff odds and MLB postseason odds. During the playoffs, you will find MLB Wild-Card odds, ALCS odds, NLCS odds, World Series odds, and more.
For every MLB playoff game, check out the baseball playoff odds at Betway.
The American League Championship Series (also known as the ALCS) will feature the two best teams from the American League. In 2023, the ALCS featured the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, with the Rangers winning in seven games.
The National League Championship Series (also known as the NLCS) will feature the two best teams from the National League. In 2023, the NLCS featured the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Philadelphia Phillies, with the Diamondbacks prevailing in seven games.
How do you bet on the World Series? The World Series features the best team in the American League playing against the best from the National League. The odds to win the World Series depend heavily on which teams survive in the playoffs. Sometimes, the two World Series teams are both powerhouses, but on other occasions, baseball’s Fall Classic has pitted a favorite against an upstart underdog.
Thus, the World Series odds change as each round of the playoffs goes on.
Looking for the current World Series odds? Check odds throughout the MLB season at Betway Sportsbook.
MLB futures are another popular form of MLB betting. Odds to win the American League, odds to win the National League, and odds to win the World Series (World Series odds) are available long before the season starts.
Even MLB All-Star Game betting odds are available at Betway before the season!
The 2024 National League looks to be as wide open as ever. The NL is split into three divisions, each featuring vastly different betting opportunities. Betway offers NL East odds, NL Central Odds, and NL West odds.
The 2024 American League looks equally unpredictable. Like the NL, the AL is split into three divisions, each of which offers vastly different betting opportunities. Betway provides AL East odds, AL Central Odds, and AL West odds.
Another popular form of MLB futures are the annual postseason MLB awards. These include the Cy Young, MVP, Rookie of the Year, and more. Keep reading to learn more about betting on the MLB awards 2024.
Who will be the 2024 MVPs of baseball? The MLB MVP race is one of the most fiercely contested battles throughout the season. In 2023, Los Angeles Angels pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani (now with the Los Angeles Dodgers) and Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. were the unanimous winners of MVP awards in their respective leagues (Ohtani in the American League and Acuna in the National League).
Betway offers AL MVP odds and NL MVP odds for the 2024 season. Who do you think will be the MLB MVPs for 2024? Keep up with the Betway Insider blog during the season as it tracks baseball MVP odds.
The 2023 MLB Rookies of the Year were also unanimous choices, as Baltimore Orioles shortstop/third baseman Gunnar Henderson and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll both dominated their respective leagues. They were also among the preseason favorites in MLB Rookie of the Year odds.
What are the MLB ROY odds looking like for this year? Keep an eye out for Rangers outfielder Evan White in the AL and Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes in the NL. Stay tuned for all the changes in the MLB ROY Odds 2024.
The 2023 AL and NL Cy Young Awards were almost unanimous selections: New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole got every AL vote, and San Diego Padres pitcher Blake Snell received 28 of 30 NL votes.
Follow the Betway Insider blog to see the 2024 AL Cy Young odds and 2024 NL Cy Young odds. Who do you think will win? Will the Seattle Mariners’ George Kirby break out? Will Andrew Abbott of the Cincinnati Reds build upon his impressive rookie year? The drama is certainly yet to unfold.
In addition to our Baseball betting odds, Betway Sportsbook is a global sportsbook for betting on all sports in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, and worldwide.
Betting odds for the most popular sports include:
A BB in baseball stands for a base-on-balls, which is another term for a walk. In other words, a batter reaches first base if the pitcher throws him four balls in a given at-bat.
The MLB regular season begins in late March. The MLB preseason (also known as “spring-training”) starts in late February, shortly after pitchers and catchers report.
Betway’s bookmakers determine MLB odds based on a combination of factors, including team performance, player injuries, and public betting trends.
Run lines in baseball are bets in which a team might be favored by 1.5 runs, or perhaps underdogs by 2.5 runs. They are different from moneyline bets.
The number -1 in MLB betting means that the favorite has a spread of one run. If the favorite wins 4-3, then the bet will be returned and not count as a win or a loss.
There are 15 teams in the American League. Broken down by division, these teams are:
AL EAST: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays

AL WEST: Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers
